If you are a cat owner you have probably walked down the cat litter aisle at the pet store and been overwhelmed by the sheer number of options and brands available. There are crystals, sand made from clay, auto-clumping sand, perfumed sand, and the list goes on.

In this article, we will answer the question; “which type of litter is best for cats”?

What Does Cat Litter Do?

If you have an inside cat, or live in an apartment that might not have access to an outdoor area then you will definitely be investing in a cat box and cat litter. Cat litter is “sand” that has been specifically designed for your cat to use when needing the “bathroom”. Cat litter is extremely absorbent and can even dampen the odor that often accompanies cat urine. It is recommended to clean out the sand once or twice a day to ensure they have a clean cat box at all times. Regular cleaning will also reduce odors emanating from the cat litter box.

Choosing the Best Cat Litter for Your Cat

There isn't one brand that one can isolate and depict as the best cat litter for your home and your cat. Often it will be a case of trial and error to find the perfect cat litter for your pet. There are however a few aspects you can keep in mind when deciding between a variety of brands and types of cat litter.

  • Auto-Clumping: Cat litter that has a clumping feature will ensure that any urine or excrement turns into a hard clump, making it easy to scoop out and keep the cat litter fresh.
  • Scent Masking: There are certain cat litters that are scented to mask the smell coming from your cat box. There are also cat litters that contain certain additives that actually absorb the smell.
  • Low Tracking: Tracking refers to cat sand that gets stuck to your cat's paws and ultimately is strewn all over your home. Luckily there are cat litters that have been formulated to be “non-stick”; ensuring that your home stays litter free.
  • Low Dust Levels: Most cat litter will create small dust particles that will fill your home; however, there are certain cat litters that are much lower in their dust content, ensuring that your technology and other belongings aren’t constantly filled with cat litter dust.
