facts about cats

Cats provide us with comfort, friendship and unconditional love, so it's only natural that we want to know as much as we can about them. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at what makes cats so unique and give you five reasons to love your feline friend even more.

1. Did you know that cats only meow to people?

Cat meow

Meowing is not a tool that cats use to communicate with each other, it is most often used to get the attention of humans. The only other time cats meow is when they are kittens and they need their mother to take notice! Adult cats communicate with each other in so many ways including other noises like hissing and purring but also smell, touch and body language.

2. Did you know a cat uses its tail to communicate too?

Cat tail

Pay close attention to your cat’s tail and you’ll get a good idea of how they are feeling! Is your cat feeling happy and content? If so, his or her tail will be up high, with the tip quivering. Is your cat irritated? You’ll know if the tip of the tail is twitching or it’s being whipped back and forth in annoyance.

3. Did you know that a cat’s whiskers are incredibly sensitive?

A cat’s whiskers are so sensitive that they can detect changes in the air around them, explaining how they can navigate the streets in the dark and how they know when a predator is lurking in the shadows. And we’re talking really sensitive, so much so that if their water bowl is too narrow, it can be painful!

4. Did you know that a cat’s strongest sense is its smell?

cat nose

Cats have a remarkable sense of smell – 14 times better than that of humans – all because they have over 200 million scent receptors in their nasal cavity. And this sense of smell comes in handy as they use it to sniff out food, find a mate or detect danger.

5. Did you know that cats spend almost 70% of their life sleeping?

Does your cat snooze a lot? It’s normal! Cats can sleep for an average of 15 hours a day – sometimes they can even snooze for up to 20 hours!
