Welcoming a new dog into your home can be one of the most exciting experiences for the whole family but there are important things to consider to ensure your new pet is as happy, secure and comfortable as possible and so that you, as a family, are set up for success. We asked Lucy Breytenbach from Just Dogs Behaviour to share her expertise with us.
1. Be patient and create routine
It can take time for a dog to learn the ropes and routine of a new home, and it can be very easy to give up if a dog shows signs of uneasiness or anxiety as they try to figure out this new life. Give them time and space. Dogs LOVE routine as it creates stability. Try to keep walking, feeding, playtime and bed times the same for at least the first few weeks after bringing your dog home.
2. Walk often
Walking is a huge stress reliever and the easiest way to build a bond with your pet. Encourage your dog to sniff about their new neighbourhood (on a lead, of course) and don't worry about correcting walking behaviour just yet, until you are certain your dog has settled in. Each time you return home, your dog will understand more and more that your home is their base. If you already have dogs, walking together and returning to base will help your current dogs to understand that this new dog is here to stay.
3. Try not to fuss
Although it is extremely important to show your new dog that you love them, try not to cuddle, kiss and overwhelm them with your love. Most dogs do not enjoy cuddling as a rule, and to a new dog it can be taken the wrong way and actually make them feel less comfortable. You need your new dog to know you, trust you and build a bond with you before expressing your love to them with large amounts of physical affection.
4. Create structured bonding time
Usually this is achieved through play time. However, another form of bonding which is also good for their health and helps them get used to a routine, is brushing. For long-haired pets we suggest daily brushing and for more short-haired pets and cats, weekly brushing.
5. Keep visitors and chaos to a minimum
Even though you may be excited to show off your new dog to friends and family, it can be extremely overwhelming for them. For the first few weeks, try to only have people around who are already regular visitors and keep noise and activity to a minimum. It may be helpful to go for a walk with them before coming into the house together, in order to build that bond.
6. Ask for help & gather info
If you are unsure how any existing family dogs, children or visitors will be with your new addition to your family, or how your new dog will behave around them, ask for assistance from a qualified behaviourist to help you integrate your new dog. Each dog is different, with different experiences so seek professional help if you feel your home could be tricky for a new dog to settle in to. It will also be helpful to get as much information about your new dog as possible, from previous homes or shelters.
