Gear up for the great outdoors

Summer in South Africa means one thing: a whole lot more time spent in the great outdoors. And there are plenty of superb products that make exploring this beautiful country with your pet, that much easier. Whether you are planning to take your pet with you on a road trip or to your nearest park or beach, make sure you have what you need for your outdoor adventure.

Top summer product recommendations:

  • Collar, lead and harness | See our full range here for dogs. Make sure your pet’s collar and/or harness fits perfectly to prevent any rubbing or discomfort.
  • Poop bags | You simply can’t leave home without them and these ones are eco-friendly.
  • Car seat protector | Tired of having a dirty car or a car so sandy it feels like you’re a travelling beach? For a clean car, be sure to check out Wagworld’s range of Car Seat Protective Dog Hammocks.
  • Water bottles | Get into the habit of taking a water bottle out for your dog so that you can be sure those hydration levels stay high. We have a large range of travel water bottles including this Olly & Max Leaf Folding Travel Water Bottle.
  • Toys | It’s always a good idea to relook at your pet’s toys to make sure they are in good condition. Remember toys can help stimulate the mind and also help your pet get the exercise he or she needs. Always high on our list is a Classic Dog Ball from Kong or the famous Classic Dog Toy from Kong (stuff it with treats or peanut butter). See all dog toys here.

Prepare for the heat

In the summer months there is a high risk of our pets getting heat stroke. There are things you can do and signs to look out for, to avoid this.

Prevent and look out for heat stroke

  • Never leave a dog in a car, even if you are just dashing to the shops and expect to be a few minutes. Temperatures inside a car can soar incredibly quickly and this is the most common reason that pets experience heat stroke, which can have very serious consequences.
  • To avoid heat stroke, always make sure your pet has access to fresh air, plenty of clean water and a place in the shade to cool off.
  • Try not to go on strenuous walks or runs during the heat of the day.
  • Remember that the paws of your pet can get burnt on hot tarmac (you might not even notice). If you are worried about your pet’s paws, try this Ricky Litchfield Paw Restore Balm.

If you suspect heat stroke (signs include excessive panting, drowsiness or dizziness, diarrhoea or vomiting), seek help from a vet immediately.

Tick and flea treatment

One of the essential aspects of pet health care is regular tick, flea and deworming treatment. Treatment should be given all year round but especially during the summer months when we are out and about so much more and our pets are more exposed.

Read one of our latest articles here to find out why regular tick, flea and deworming treatment is vital and to learn more about the treatment options available.

Get that summer cut

Now is the perfect time to think about grooming your dog or cat and preparing their coat for summer. Regular grooming helps to ensure your pet’s coat and skin are healthy and that any nooks and crannies are clean, thereby preventing any nasty infections.

When it comes to grooming your pet there are a few options:

Regularly brushing your pet’s coat is good for blood circulation and essential for good coat condition. It removes dead skin cells, aerates the coat and unclogs pores. For long-haired dogs and cats, de-shedding helps to prevent mats which can be painful, difficult to remove and can lead to infections.
