If you’re planning a road trip and you’re taking your loyal companion with you, then there are a few tips and tricks you should know so that your cat or dog will be healthy, happy and able to enjoy the trip just as much as you.

Make it comfortable for your pet

For stress-free travelling, ensure your pet is comfortable and feels safe and secure in the car. If they feel cramped or have too much space so they are flung from side-to-side, they won’t be able to settle for the long haul.

Some top products in the market that are great for comfort include a WagWorld Car Seat Protective Hammock (for dogs), or a comfortable pet carrier (for dogs and cats). It’s a good idea to get your pet used to these before setting off. The added bonus of using products such as this, is that they keep your car clean too.

Depending on size, your pet’s bed and blanket may also add an essential comfort touch. Packing items they know and love can help them feel reassured.

Stop to stretch their legs

Just as we feel cooped up and need to stretch our legs on a long journey, so too do our pets. Stop every two hours or as often as you can to allow for a much-needed toilet break and a chance to stretch it out. Remember those poop bags.

Pack your pet care essentials

Staying hydrated on a long journey is very important so take plenty of water and a dog bowl or drinking bottle. Also remember your pet’s food if he or she will need to eat when you are on the road (it’s important to stick to their regular feeling routine). You’ll also need a collar, harness and lead for when it is time to get out.

Keep your pets entertained

Travelling is a great excuse to re-look at your pet’s toys and what they love to play with.

  • Try filling a Kong Classic with treats or peanut butter for hours of entertainment.
  • Choose a rope toy like this one for chewing fun but also to play with when you stop for exercise or get to your destination.
  • Cats can be more sensitive when it comes to travel so bring their favourite toys or toys that are similar to those they already enjoy playing with. Browse our cat toy range here.

Easing travel anxiety in pets

If your pet is not used to travelling or gets anxious, then consider giving your cat or dog calming products. Recommended products include:

It’s a good idea to chat to your vet about what they think is best for your pet.

Tackle motion sickness

Puppies and kittens are more likely to suffer from motion sickness. Motion sickness can be caused by overexcitement or nervousness but can also be caused by fluid in the ear moving around and causing them to feel dizzy and nauseous.

To help ease motion sickness, ensure your pet is safely secured (and not flying around the backseat). Give them plenty of fresh air and, ideally, a view of the road. There are also motion sickness tablets that can be administered but you must speak to your vet about the options available.

Make sure your vaccinations, tick, flea & worming treatment are up-to-date

Last of all, before travelling make sure your pet is up-to-date with all vaccinations, tick, flea and deworming treatment. Read one of our latest articles here to find out why regular tick, flea and deworming treatment is vital and to learn more about the treatment options available.
